Salt Meats Cheese, Mosman

When I heard about a new Italian providore in my neighbourhood I was excited. Excited by thoughts of fresh burrata, tiramisu by the slice, San Marzano tomatoes and more. When I discovered that said providore was a Mosman branch of Salt Meats Cheese, with an adjoining café and wine bar, I knew I’d be a regular.

Salt Meats Cheese now has four stores – three in Sydney and one on the Gold Coast. My local store is right in the heart of Mosman – just off Military Road at the top of Raglan Street. It’s alongside a public car park and a 10 minute downhill stroll to Balmoral Beach.

Salt Meats Cheese, MosmanIf you’re visiting Salt Meats Cheese for the shopping then browse their wide selection of charcuterie meats and cheeses, flavoured salts, handmade dried pastas and ready-made meals. You’ll no doubt walk away with everything you need for a home cooked Italian feast. My visits so far have mainly been to the café – so here I wanted to share some of my highlights from their new menu.

The burrata is locally made and is also available from the fridge for take-away purchase. As soon as it’s sliced with a knife the delicate ball splits to reveal a soft, creamy and oozing centre.  The cherry tomatoes and basil sauce make perfect companions.

All of the salad options are fresh, light and generous  – my top pick goes to the ‘Salt Meats Cheese’ salad – not least because I could eat the fried baby capers as snack on their own.

Of course you can’t go to Salt Meats Cheese and not indulge in a little meat and cheese. Their grazing boards offer great value and are perfect for sharing over a glass of wine. Choose either a meat platter or a cheese platter, or go the whole hog like with the 3 meats and 3 cheeses grazing board. All come served with bread.

It’s not all about the food at Salt Meats Cheese – the drinks list features cocktails (a steal for $12), beers and cider, as well as a whole bunch of Italian and Australian wines – all with surprisingly little marks ups (bottles start at $30). And if it’s too early for cocktail hour then their coffee is worth trying too – an offsite coffee roaster makes their signature Salt Meats Cheese blend.

Salt Meats Cheese, MosmanI read early on that hopes were that the Mosman Salt Meats Cheese store would be more of a community meeting point and less of a destination grocery store. A few months or so later I’d say it’s a bit of both. With breakfast, lunch and dinner on offer it’s hard to drop in for an ingredient or too without being tempted to linger in the café and bar.

  1. Looks like a gorgeous meeting place, I love the greenery adorning the ceiling and the high tables. As for Italian food? Totally feeling you on being a regular. I am a sucker for anything that screams ‘Italian Trattoria’ and Salt Meats Cheese seems to channel its Italian roots in a pretty beautiful way. Nice review Laura, I’m going to have to put this on my list if/when I visit NSW! xx
